![]() ![]() This study examines the contribution of political leadership to the reduction in the level of the region’s underdevelopment. This is one of the major reasons the people of the region feel marginalized and demand for “resource control” as panacea. As documented in the 2006 UNDP Niger Delta Report, the Niger Delta region has a Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.514, making it the least developed crude oil producing region in the world. For sixty (60) years now, the Niger Delta area in Nigeria has remained the country’s crude oil producing region and crude oil is the major source of revenue for the nation.
